Stafford advertiser Saturday 29th September 1860:

"I am no orator, and it is fortunate for me that it requires no great powers of speech to explain the nature of my feelings at this moment; for I must be differently constituted from all other men if every pulse within me did not beat with pride and pleasure. What other feelings can be inspired by the reception which you have given to my name, by the language which has been addressed to me by my respected friend the tenant-spokesman, by the sentiments which it conveys, and by this beautiful and magnificent gift, which is the proudest heirloom of my house and will bear perpetual record of those sentiments? It is with difficulty I refrain from expatiating upon the extraordinary beauty of this noble gift, for it belongs to a branch of art I have devoted much attention to. I have been permitted to inspect it since it arrived at Keele, and I say deliberately and advisedly that nothing has been produced which can surpass it in design and execution since the famous days of the great Italian artists."
