hallmarks for barnard 1864
Ewers of this pattern, after models by the French artist, Louis Fréret (fl. mid 1850s), were described by their manufacturers, Edward Barnard & Sons as being in the 'Louis Quatorze, style irrégulière.' They were made in marine and equestrian patterns, one with vignettes of Neptune and Ariadne as seen here, the other with horses.
Fréret supplied designs and models for silver to Mortimer & Hunt, Barnard's & Charles Frederick Hancock. At the Exposition
Universal in Paris in 1855, the latter showed two silver equestrian statuettes, one of Napoleon I, the other of Napoleon III, for which the horses and figures were from models respectively by Henry McCarthy and Fréret (The Illustrated London News, London, 15 September 1855, pp. 331-332).
