James Brudenell, 5th Earl of Cardigan (1725-1811) was a British nobleman and politician who inherited the earldom of Cardigan in 1732. Educated at Westminster School and later at

the University of Oxford, he sat in the House of Commons before succeeding to the peerage, after which he took his seat in the House of Lords.

During his lifetime, Cardigan was known as a prominent landowner and an influential figure in Northamptonshire society. He held several local offices, including Lord Lieutenant of Northamptonshire, reflecting his important role in county administration and public affairs.

James Brudenell married Elizabeth Tollemache in 1777, but the couple had no children. On his death in 1811, the earldom passed to his nephew, Robert Brudenell, who became the 6th Earl of Cardigan. James Brudenell is remembered as a representative of the eighteenth-century British aristocracy, combining political service with the responsibilities of a major landed estate.
